Tobacco industry lobbyist Nick Naylor has a seemingly impossible task: promoting cigarette smoking in a time when the health hazards of the activity have become too plain to ignore. Nick, however, revels in his job, using argument and twisted logic to place, as often as not, his clients in the positions of either altruistic do-gooders or victims. Nick’s son Joey needs to understand and respect his dad’s philosophy, and Nick works hard to respond to that need without compromising his lack of values. When a beautiful news reporter betrays Nick’s sexually-achieved trust, his world seems in danger of collapsing. But there’s always one more coffin nail in Nick’s pack.
This one’s for Erwann
Directed by Michel Gondry who’s film The Science of Sleep is in theater right now, Dave Chapelle’s block party features Chappelle during the fall of 2004 when he threw a block party in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. He invited several alternative hip hop and neo-soul musical artists to perform at the party, including Kanye West, Mos Def, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and The Roots along with The Central State University Marching Band. Lauryn Hill was also scheduled to perform at the party, but since Columbia Records refused to release her songs for use in the production, she decided instead to reunite The Fugees for the occasion.
Underground is Emir Kusturica’s cult movie, awarded in 1995 at Cannes film festival. It focuses on the invasion of Yugoslavia during the Second World War and a love story of three main protagonists: Marko, Crni and Natalija.
Daka discovered a website with notes from the production team. It reveals so good the atmosphere during the shooting, you can almost feel it! Here is a selection but check out the site for yourself :
november 5, 1993. Filming begins in Prague. The gypsy musicians still did not pass the border between Yugoslavia and Hungary. The passports are OK, but as they are gypsy, the customs officers ask 1000 deutsch marks for everyone. Whatever the Eastern European country, problems are always the same. Their absence would seriously compromise filming.

december 16, 1993. At the end of very long discussions, the gypsy orchestra grows from 5 to 9 members. They accept the same total pay.

Acclaimed from Sundance to Deauville film festivals, this indie movie is a must see!
Jason Lee is talented! He used to be a pro skateboarder in the early 90′ and founder of Stereo Skateboards. Today he is a Golden Globe award nominee and played in a lot of good movies. His first major movie role was in Kevin Smith’s Mallrats which became a cult hit. He remained a close friend of Smith and has appeared in most of the director’s works, including Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl and Clerks II.
Jason Lee is also a WeActivist. He now plays in and directs a great and fun sitcom called “My name is Earl”.
Lee stars as Earl J. Hickey, a scruffy, petty crook with occasional run-ins with the law, whose newly-won $100,000 lottery ticket is lost when he is hit by a car. He develops a belief in the concept of karma when he hears about it during the Carson Daly show while lying in his hospital bed after the accident. He decides he wants to turn his life around. After a few good deeds, his $100,000 ticket comes back to him. With his new lucky money, he proceeds to make a list of all the bad things he’s done, and cross items off that list, one-by-one, by doing good deeds to atone for them. Suplee plays Earl’s “simple” but generally very kind hearted younger brother Randy, who is his sidekick as Earl seeks to amend for his past transgressions.

Borat in da house!

A documentary about the history of punk rock in America from 1980-1986. Generally unheralded at the time, the early 1980s hardcore punk rock scene gave birth to much of the rock music and culture that followed. There would be no Nirvana, Beastie Boys or Red Hot Chili Peppers were it not for hardcore pioneers such as Black Flag, Bad Brains and Minor Threat. Hardcore was more than music, it was a social movement created by Reagan-era misfit kids. The participants constituted a tribe unto themselves, some finding a voice, others an escape in the hard-edged music. And while some sought a better world, others were just angry and wanted to raise hell. “American Hardcore” traces this lost subculture, from its early roots in 1980 to its extinction in 1986.

This is a follow-up post on Timmy Turner. I posted allready about “Second thoughts”, his first surf movie. Well last week was the premiere of his new flick entitled “The Tsunami Diaries” at the Newport Beach Film Festival for which they won the “humanitarian” award. Follow this link for a 3 minute preview
|
THE TSUNAMI DIARIES is the inspiring true story of two best friends who strike out on a quest to document the destruction of the tsunami in Indonesia.
When Pro-surfer TIMMY TURNER (Second Thoughts) and DUSTIN HUMPHREYs pursuit hits a roadblock, they hatch a plan to carry out a relief mission of their own. Acquiring a boat, The Mikumba, and setting sail to the damaged corners of the Indian Ocean.
Timmy brings food, medical supplies, and a few goats, to the neglected remote islands of Northern Sumatra. Recruiting people along the way, including Timmys Mom and MATT GEORGE (In Gods Hands), they form a motley crew of surfers, surf journalists, and doctors, to confront dangerous obstacles around every turn. The Tsunami Diaries is a story of tremendous courage, and the unity of all human beings.

Wassup Rockers, the new movie from Larry Clark, will be in theaters on April, 5th. 10 years after his raw, powerful and passionate, yet controversial movie "KIDS" – a frenetic 24 hours in the life of a group of contemporary teenage skaters – Larry Clark, one of the world's most renowed photographer is back with a story based on real life experiences of a group of Latino and Hispanic teenagers who, instead of conforming to the hip hop culture of their gang infested neighborhood, wear their clothes tight, listen to and play punk rock and ride their skateboards. Constantly harassed for being different, they have to fight to be themselves, in the heart of South Central, Los Angeles.

V for Vendetta is the new movie from the producers of The Matrix, the Wachowski brothers, featuring Nathalie Portman as Evey.
It is playing in theaters in the States allready as well as in most european countries. In France it won’t be out before mid april – dubbing sucks.
This mainstream movie is quiet astonishing in the fact that the hero is a terrorist who appears wearing the dynamite waistcoast of a suicide bomber and blows up buildings in the heart of London to change the world!
Inspired by a comic book from the greatest writer of them, Alan Moore, who also wrote Watchmen or The league of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the movie, set in a future Britain ruled by an oppressive government poisining its people where a terrorist, beneath a full face wooden mask that he never takes off, is considered a hero, audaciously emphasizes the links with the 9/11 events.
People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.

This is not your average surf movie! Second thoughts is real hardcore surfing!
With some noodles, a bag of rice or two, and wet lighters and matches, Timmy Turner’s crew set off in to the setting for the film.
The film itself takes place in Indonesia on one of its small islands with a beach full of dangerous reef. The group was put in a situation that seems a lot harsher than that of “Survivor, as they were faced with some severe weather conditions and facing new challenges in their eating habits. They were forced to gather rainwater, as well as salt water, to boil and drink. You are taken along on their journey through the rainforest of Indonesia and their treacherous hikes on their quest for the perfect surfing destination.
Posted later : I was cruising around looking for more info on Timmy Turner and sadly there is bad bad news. He had to get brain surgery last december following a disease he caught in Mexico. He is now recovering slowly. You can show your love and support here.

Onedotzero is a global network of film festivals, showcasing the best of new digital film and animation.
From 24th to 26th february, onedotzero was in La Ferme du Buisson next to Paris, so we went to check it out!
With a selection of more than 150 short movies compiled in various categories and a really pleasant setting to view the movies it was good fun.
We want to see the following categories of movies :
. Wow + Flutter 05 - new images and graphic design
. Graphic Cities 05 - cities / urbanism / architecture
and then Daka went to see Extended Play 05 – new narrative forms while I went to check out on Memories – a retrospective of short films and documentaries by Mike Mills.
Mike Mills is best known for the video clips he conceived for bands like the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth or Air. But he also realised or directed some very subtil short movies and documentaries focusing on the social values of the american society. I particularly liked the short movie called DEFORMER as it is about Ed Templeton, the skater and the artist.
Thumbsucker is the first long movie directed by Mike Mills and which was presented at the Sundance festival in 2005. It features Keanu Reeves and Vince Vaughn among others. The story seems quite weird…
Justin throws himself and everyone around him into chaos when he attempts to break free from his addiction to his thumb.
Can’t wait to see it!

Brokeback Mountain - Beautiful movie from Ang LEE (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) that we went to see yesterday evening. The photography and scenery is amazing, the (love) story is intense, melancholic, poetic, the acting is incredible. This movie is a masterpiece and has allready been awarded (4 golden globes). It really made me want to go fishing with a friend next w-e…
nb. I didn’t recognise him at first but Heath Ledger – Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain – played “Skip” in Lord of Dogtowns and is currently playing in the new Stacey Peralta project due in 2006.
A drama loosely based on the life of Greg Noll, the surfer extraordinaire who, upon settling in Hawaii in the early 1950s, helped create the laid-back lifestyle attributed to the sport and its followers.
